Next iPhone will feature a 19-pin connector, Reuters confirms

We're hearing new reports about a smaller dock connector debuting on the iPhone 5 - this time courtesy of insider sources close to Reuters. While we've heard before that the next iPhone will feature a smaller dock connector this is the first time we get a sneak peek at the actual size. According to the undisclosed sources the new dock connector will be 19-pin, instead of the previous 30-pin one.

The new smaller dock will open up space at the bottom for the migrating 3.5 mm headphone jack (which makes its way down from the top of the device), whilst keeping the microphone and speaker grills at their previous locations, albeit with a different design.

A new connector will surely infuriate the numerous owners of accessories, tailored for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. And it makes us think why put a brand new connector instead of just switching to the popular microUSB. Apple is sure to have its reasons, but on the surface it looks like a move motivated mostly by the company's aim to sell more accessories.

In other news DigiTimes reports that Taiwan-based Pegatron has begun production of the next iPhone in their Shanghai factory. The iPhone 5 should hit the shelves around October with sources suggesting it will feature a bigger display of 16:9 aspect ratio, an updated design and finally sporting the shiny new iOS 6 (but you knew that already, didn't you).

Jelly Bean update in the works for HTC One XL, One S says Telstra

Australian carrier Telstra let it slip that HTC is working on an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for at least two of the One series smartphones - the One XL and the One S (those are the two Snapdragon S4-based One droids).

Owners of the Tegra 3-based One X shouldn't worry - Telstra Australia carries only the XL version, so they wouldn't list update info on the One X anyway.

The info on the carrier's site is pretty scarce - HTC is preparing the update but even Telstra doesn?t know when it will get it. And when they do get it, they'll put the update through a testing phase before pushing it out to its users.

You can keep an eye on this page for any updates on the release date of Android Jelly Bean for the HTC One XL and One S.

There still isn't an official roadmap from HTC that details which phones will get Android 4.1 and when. As for the unofficial channels, the XDA-Developers community efforts are already showing results.

Sprint-bound Galaxy Reverb leaks, ICS on board

An image, which leaked on Twitter reveals a low-end Samsung Galaxy Reverb (SPH-M950), that's bound for a Sprint release. The image was leaked by the same source that brought us the Galaxy Jasper - a similar device bound for Verizon's LTE network. The post has been deleted from Twitter since, which leads us to believe that it was trustworthy.

The Reverb offers a different capacitive button layout than the Jasper, but otherwise looks identical. Both should feature a 4" WVGA (400 x 800) screen, 768 MB worth of RAM and a 5 MP camera on the back with Ice Cream Sandwich on top. Under the hood is where things are different - the Reverb is reportedly powered by a single-core 1.4GHz processor, while the Jasper has a high-end dual-core Krait processor, clocked at 1.5 GHz.

There's no word on eventual pricing or availability or if the Galaxy Reverb will offer LTE connectivity like the Galaxy Jasper.

Android 4.0 ICS is officially a no go for HTC Desire HD

It looks like the saga surrounding the official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update of the much beloved HTC Desire HD is finally over, folks. HTC have officially removed the 2010 Android monster from the official list of devices scheduled to get the ICS treatment.

Here goes HTC's official statement on the matter:

After extensive testing, we?ve determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD. When we consider new versions of software, we weigh a number of factors, but ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor. We apologize for any confusion this change may have caused our customers.

This means that, should they want to see their device run a more up-to-date Android version, the owners of the HTC Desire HD will have to install it in an unofficial fashion.

Nokia in Q2: Lumia sales up, company still in the red

Nokia is still going through the tough transitional period as confirmed by its Q2 financial results. The report is a mix of good news and bad news - the good news is that Lumia sales are picking up, the bad news is that the Finnish company is still losing money.

There were 4 million Lumia phones sold in Q2 of 2012 (up from 2.2 million in Q1). Stephen Elop commented that Nokia will continue to support current devices "well beyond the launch of Windows Phone 8" (current phones will get WP7.8, but not WP8).

Sales and shipping numbers for Nokia's smart devices declined both year on year and quarter on quarter. This is mainly due to reduced Symbian sales and the falling Average Selling Price (ASP) of the platform. On the other hand, the ASP on smart devices combined went up both QoQ and YoY.

Net sales of Nokia featurephones are down YoY, but mostly unchanged from the previous quarter even though the number of devices shipped went up. The sub-?50 models like the Nokia 100 and 101 were driving sales up, but the pricier higher-end models found it hard to compete with affordable smartphones.

The report mentions declining net sales across the world, except for North America, a market Nokia has been working hard to get back into. Net sales were up 45% there compared to last year's Q2, but the number of shipped units fell by 60%.

Nokia received ?400 million pre-payments for intellectual property licenses and ?196 million ($250 million) quarterly "platform support" from Microsoft. The Finnish company also sold its Vertu subsidary, which wasn?t essential to its core business. Nokia bought Scalado, a company known for its cool imaging software.

In an effort to reduce expenses, Nokia closed its R&D department in Ulm, Germany and Barnaby, Canada and is working towards closing off a factory in Salo, Finland. The R&D department there will continue to operate.

The bottom line is this - net sales from Devices & Services department of Nokia are down 26% YoY, shipments are down 5% and the operating loss in Q2 was ?474 million. The company as a whole posted an operating loss of ?826.

You can read more details on Nokia's Q2 2012 performance in the company's press release (PDF).

Jelly Bean updates for Galaxy S III, S II already in the works?

Unlike HTC, Samsung is yet to announce the list of devices that will get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Insiders have talked to SamMobile, however, and said that Samsung is already testing Jelly Bean on the Samsung Galaxy S III.

The new flagship is proving to be a strong seller and Samsung is reportedly close to finishing up the update - there's no planned date yet, but August or September are reportedly a realistic target.

An update for the predecessor - the Samsung Galaxy S II - is also being tested, but it is less certain as Samsung is yet to evaluate how well the new OS with its customizations on top runs on the older hardware.

The company will reportedly place more focus on updating its high-end devices, so the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab 7.7 (which use pretty much the same internals as the S II) also have a chance of getting an update.

By the way, both the Galaxy S III and the S II have already got the chance to taste Jelly Bean through CyanogenMod 10 (and other ROMs too). Still, Samsung hasn?t committed to any updates officially, so which devices get what and when is yet uncertain.

Xiaomi MI-2 leaks, might be the cheapest quad-core out there

Xiaomi is the Chinese manufacturer, which brought us the MI-1 - an affordable and capable dual-core smartphone with a deeply customized Android experience, thanks to its MIUI launcher.

Now, almost a year later we got a glimpse of what's next to come from Xiaomi. Allegedly named the MI-2, the device in the leaked photosis reportedly a quad-core phone with a 720p display. It's supposed to offer a dual-LED camera on the back and a two-tone back panel - a black strip around the camera and the loudspeaker, and a side-removable blue panel.

The Xiaomi MI-2

The Xiaomi MI-2 is rumored to cost 1.999 Yuan or around $313 (?259), which is a pretty tempting price for an unlocked handset. The MI-2 is expected to be officially unveiled next month.

HTC officially confirms Jelly Bean coming to One X, XL and S

Yesterday, Telstra let the cat out of the bag - HTC is working on a Jelly Bean update. Today, HTC officially confirmed it and offered the full list of devices that are planned to get the update.

There are no big surprises here - the HTC One X (the Tegra 3-based model), the HTC One XL (Qualcomm S4-based version, known as One X on AT&T) and the HTC One S will eventually be updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The smartphone maker will make "timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean" available to the public later on.

The HTC One V, which is the lowest rung on the One series ladder, is not on the list of devices to be updated and neither are any of the droids outside the One series.

Vodafone Australia begins updating Nexus S with Android 4.1

Vodafone Australia has just confirmed on their blog that they will be rolling out the Android 4.1 update for the Google Nexus S starting today, July 19.

The update has been approved by Vodafone and will begin rolling out on 1:00 p.m. AEST. Hopefully, this means that the Nexus S in other regions will be getting the update shortly.

Meanwhile, they have also mentioned that the Android 4.1 update for the Galaxy Nexus is being prepared for submission to Vodafone for testing but no dates have been given as to when the update should be ready to roll out.

Source

Update: It seems the Android 4.1 update for the Nexus S will be delayed (hat tip to Rajesh for this info). The update apparently does not meet all the Australian regulatory requirements related to emergency calls. Vodafone will update their blog as and when the update starts rolling out again.

Fujitsu Introduces docomo NEXT series REGZA Phone T-02D
REGZA Phone features breathtaking visual entertainment and support for Xi and NOTTV

Tokyo, July 23, 2012 - Fujitsu today announced that its new docomo NEXT series REGZA Phone T-02D smartphone will be available in Japan from NTT DOCOMO, Inc., beginning July 26, 2012.

REGZA Phone T-02D is equipped with Mobile REGZA Engine 6.0-the latest version of Toshiba's high-definition imaging technology-and an OLED "NEW AMOLED Plus" display, enabling the most superb graphics in REGZA Phone history.

In addition to supporting ultra-high-speed Xi communications and NOTTV(1) broadcasts for smartphones, the high-spec smartphone boasts a rich lineup of features including a 13.1 megapixel camera and a high-performance dual-core CPU, thereby enabling users to enjoy stunning visuals.

In line with the advent of high-speed communications and multimedia broadcasts for smartphones, video content services have been improving on almost a daily basis, including such enhancements as support for high-resolution video. To make the most of these advances, REGZA Phone T-02D brings together Mobile REGZA Engine 6.0-the REGZA series' latest high-definition imaging technology-with an OLED "NEW AMOLED Plus" display.

The result is a video entertainment-oriented smartphone that has been developed to allow users to enjoy video with unparalleled image quality. As the new smartphone is powered by ultra-high-speed Xi communications, users will find it convenient to download or stream high-resolution video, and support for NOTTV ensures a wide variety of video content to enjoy.

T-02D works with REGZA Link Share, which can connect the device to a REGZA Blu-ray player to play recorded TV shows, making it possible for users to enjoy their favorite recorded content wherever, whenever. Moreover, in terms of usability this smartphone is in a class of its own thanks to a high-performance 1.5 Ghz dual core CPU and the latest version of the Human Centric Engine, offered by Fujitsu to make for easy operations through technology that adapts to users and usage environments.

Furthermore, the smartphone features a host of standard and convenient features, all packed into a single handset, such as a smart fingerprint sensor, an 1,800mAh large-capacity battery, water- (IPX5/8) and dust-resistant (IPX5)(2) technology, ATOK, infrared communications, and Osaifu-Keitai®. Product Features
1. Mobile REGZA Engine & REGZA Link Share

Mobile REGZA Engine 6.0, the latest in high-definition imaging technology
The handset offers new support for two technologies: Active Noise Reduction technology, which performs noise processing in a manner that best suits the image, and Sharpness Equalizer technology, which produces a clear picture by adjusting the contours of the photo. These technologies ensure that 1seg broadcasts and web video, as well as still photographs(3) and movies captured with the phone are visually even better looking.
REGZA Link Share(4) connects with REGZA devices and REGZA Blu-ray(5)
T-02D also supports REGZA Link Share, which enables REGZA devices to be connected with REGZA Blu-ray players. As a result, users can enjoy both live and recorded high-definition programming from anywhere in their house(6), in addition to being able to make high-quality copies(7) of programs that can be enjoyed while on the go.

2. Support for NOTTV broadcasts for smartphones

With the stunning graphics produced by Mobile REGZA Engine 6.0 combined with Dolby® Mobile v3 virtual 5.1-channel surround sound(8)-equivalent to that of a home theater-users can fully enjoy realistic and thrilling high-resolution NOTTV video. Transmitting the REGZA Phone's display to a big-screen TV(9) makes for an even more enjoyable experience.
3. 4.3-inch OLED "NEW AMOLED Plus" display featuring Corning® Gorilla® Glass

The smartphone features an OLED "NEW AMOLED Plus" display that renders video with remarkable clarity in a full spectrum of 16.77 million colors. A wide color gamut that can produce 110% NTSC(10) ensures vivid, lifelike pictures.

In addition, the phone's super-durable Corning® Gorilla® Glass is tough enough to withstand drops and the rigors of daily life.
4. Ultra-high-speed Xi communications and a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU

With ultra-high-speed Xi communications and unparalleled processing power through a high-performance 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, users can enjoy HD video and online games without a hitch.
5. Latest Human Centric Engine delivers ultimate convenience through dedicated LSI

"On" when held
Based on the smartphone's orientation and motion, the handset automatically determines whether or not it is being held in the user's hand. As long as it is being held, the screen will be kept lit.
Intellicolor
The phone detects the kind of lighting in use at the user's location-such as fluorescent, incandescent, and natural lighting-and automatically adjusts the screen's color balance to the optimal setting.
Shake-activated screen recovery
Even if the user unintentionally tilts the phone, the screen orientation can be returned to its original state by simply shaking the handset two or more times. This is useful for quickly returning the screen orientation to the desired state when the user is lying down.
Sleep log(11)
With its built-in accelerometer and microphone, the smartphone can detect the state of the user's sleep and provide detailed information about the user's sleeping habits, including the duration of sleep, the number of times the user rolls over during the night, and snoring-related information. The handset will also offer advice to users about how to improve their sleeping habits.

6. High-resolution 13.1-megapixel camera among the top of its class of smartphones

T-02D's camera is equipped with an "Exmor R for mobile" back-illuminated CMOS sensor, along with the "Milbeaut Mobile" image processing engine that incorporates a wide range of photography capabilities, including high-sensitivity capturing and noise reduction. The combination of these features allows for stunning high-resolution photographs and videos.

Highly responsive
The camera has a launch time and shot-to-shot wait time of about 0.5 seconds(12). As a result, users never miss out on the perfect moment, and can capture it with a great looking picture.
Super nighttime mode
In addition to T-02D's ISO 25600-equivalent high sensitivity, the phone also comes equipped with a nighttime mode that allows users to take beautiful photos at night while minimizing camera shake and noise, two problems commonly encountered with previous low-light photography technology.

7. Smart fingerprint sensor with on-off switch

Rather than using a passcode or swipe pattern to unlock the phone's screen, the new handset's fingerprint sensor allows users to simply press and slide a finger across a switch to quickly unlock it. The screen can also be turned on and off using the switch, enabling one-touch operations.
Compatibility with Key Services

This includes sp mode mail, iConcier, Shabette Concier, dMenu, dMarket, docomo Palette UI, docomo Anshin Scan, Area Mail, FOMA® high-speed (max. downlink speed of 14 Mbps/uplink speed of 5.7Mbps)

Refresh Roundup: week of July 16th, 2012

By Zachary Lutz posted Jul 22nd 2012 9:16PM

Refresh Roundup week of July 16th, 2012

Your smartphone and / or tablet is just begging for an update. From time to time, these mobile devices are blessed with maintenance refreshes, bug fixes, custom ROMs and anything in between, and so many of them are floating around that it's easy for a sizable chunk to get lost in the mix. To make sure they don't escape without notice, we've gathered every possible update, hack, and other miscellaneous tomfoolery we could find during the last week and crammed them into one convenient roundup. If you find something available for your device, please give us a shout at tips at engadget dawt com and let us know. Enjoy!

Official Android updates

HTC EVO 3D and EVO Design 4G: While it's a little late to the game, Sprint has revealed that it will begin the Android 4.0 rollout to these two handsets in early August. As with the counterparts at Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile, both the EVO 3D and EVO Design 4G will each receive Sense 3.6. [Sprint]HTC Desire HD: Last week, we reported that Telus had cancelled its Android 4.0 upgrade for the Desire HD. Now, HTC has made it clear that the OS won't be made available for the phone at all -- apparently, the user experience wasn't very good. [HTC]Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G: T-Mobile has released an incremental update for OTA download which brings refinements to the proximity sensor and resolves issues of E911 over WiFi. The 15.7MB update is also available via Samsung Kies. [Android Central]HTC One V: A software update is now available that enables support for the HTC Media Link HD. [Android Central]

Unofficial Android updates, custom ROMs and misc. hackery

Motorola Atrix 2: The Atrix 2 is set to receive Android 4.0 sometime during Q3 of this year, but if you just can't wait for the official release, then go ahead and snag this leaked build of Ice Cream Sandwich. [Phandroid]Samsung Galaxy Nexus: Koush has released ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0 for the Galaxy Nexus, which includes the ability to create iterative backups and restore files greater than 2GB, along with bug fixes and UI tweaks. Koush also took the opportunity to share his plans for future changes to the ROM Manager app, which will include a paid ROM section and the ability to upload ROMs. [MobileSyrup]HTC Desire HD: A ROM known as Jellytime, which is based on Android 4.1, is now available for the Desire HD. Currently, the camera, Bluetooth audio and tethering are said to be non-functional, and users may need to contend with random reboots and other power management glitches. Problems aside, hopefully it'll help take the sting away from the ol' ICS debacle. [Thanks, typongtv] [xda-developers]HTC One X: The latest version of HTC One maXimus is based on a leaked version of a future update for the One X, which is said to bring a new kernel and baseband software, along with improved stability and faster performance. [Thanks, Martin] [KitGuru]Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and 10.1: Official nightly builds of CyanogenMod 9 are now available for these two tablets. [Android Police]

In the dead of summer, what's the easiest way to stay super-cool whilst keeping up with the hottest news in portable communications technology? Why, it's sticking a 120-minute cassette of the Engadget Mobile Podcast in your Walkman Sport, getting airlifted to Patagonia, and sitting atop an icy mountain, chewing a stick of your favorite peppermint gum, of course. If you're looking for a quick chill, though, just hit the play button below and let the digital breeze flow gently through your skull. Either way.
