Nokia in Q2: Lumia sales up, company still in the red

Nokia is still going through the tough transitional period as confirmed by its Q2 financial results. The report is a mix of good news and bad news - the good news is that Lumia sales are picking up, the bad news is that the Finnish company is still losing money.

There were 4 million Lumia phones sold in Q2 of 2012 (up from 2.2 million in Q1). Stephen Elop commented that Nokia will continue to support current devices "well beyond the launch of Windows Phone 8" (current phones will get WP7.8, but not WP8).

Sales and shipping numbers for Nokia's smart devices declined both year on year and quarter on quarter. This is mainly due to reduced Symbian sales and the falling Average Selling Price (ASP) of the platform. On the other hand, the ASP on smart devices combined went up both QoQ and YoY.

Net sales of Nokia featurephones are down YoY, but mostly unchanged from the previous quarter even though the number of devices shipped went up. The sub-?50 models like the Nokia 100 and 101 were driving sales up, but the pricier higher-end models found it hard to compete with affordable smartphones.

The report mentions declining net sales across the world, except for North America, a market Nokia has been working hard to get back into. Net sales were up 45% there compared to last year's Q2, but the number of shipped units fell by 60%.

Nokia received ?400 million pre-payments for intellectual property licenses and ?196 million ($250 million) quarterly "platform support" from Microsoft. The Finnish company also sold its Vertu subsidary, which wasn?t essential to its core business. Nokia bought Scalado, a company known for its cool imaging software.

In an effort to reduce expenses, Nokia closed its R&D department in Ulm, Germany and Barnaby, Canada and is working towards closing off a factory in Salo, Finland. The R&D department there will continue to operate.

The bottom line is this - net sales from Devices & Services department of Nokia are down 26% YoY, shipments are down 5% and the operating loss in Q2 was ?474 million. The company as a whole posted an operating loss of ?826.

Nokia completes Scalado technology acquisition

Today Nokia announced that they have completed the acquisition of technologies, developers and intellectual property from imaging software specialists Scalado. The Finns first hinted at this deal last month, and they are now ready to finalize it.

As you may know, due to some reasons that the two companies have chosen not to disclose, Nokia is not actually buying the Scalado company, but only its personnel and technology. From a users' perspective there's little difference though, as the cool software features developed by the Swedish-based company will soon be making their way to Nokia smartphones.

In fact, Nokia Lumia users have already started seeing the benefits of the Nokia Scalado partnership with the camera extras update that was delivered at the end of June.

With hints getting stronger and stronger that we might see the first PureView-packing Lumia smartphone this Fall, the completion of this deal could only lead to more good news for cameraphone lovers. Imagine the power of that huge sensor combined with impressive software tricks like Scalado Remove and Scalado Rewind and Smart Group Shot.

Nokia completes acquisition of developers, technologies and intellectual property for imaging from Scalado

Acquisition aims to bring outstanding imaging experiences to Nokia Lumia smartphones

Espoo, Finland and Lund, Sweden: Nokia announced today that it has completed the acquisition of all technologies and intellectual property from Scalado AB, originally announced on June 14, 2012. As part of the transaction, approximately 50 world-class imaging specialists transferred to Nokia.

"We believe that this acquisition will strengthen Nokia's leading position in mobile imaging and provide us with a great opportunity to create even better imaging products and applications," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president, Smart Devices at Nokia. "We welcome the skilled and passionate professionals from Scalado to Nokia and are excited to have them work with the rest of our talented and dedicated imaging experts to bring world-class imaging solutions to our Nokia Lumia smartphones. The Nokia team is already responsible for many leading innovations in mobile imaging and, together with the experts from Scalado, we aim at astonishing the world with new, outstanding imaging experiences."

Lund has now become a key site for Nokia's imaging software for smartphones, in addition to Nokia's existing locations in Espoo and Tampere, Finland.

"We're excited to join Nokia at such an important time in its smartphone story," said Sami Niemi, co-founder of Scalado and now head of Capture & Relive, Smart Devices at Nokia. "The technologies and competences we've developed should help move from taking photos to capturing memories and emotions."
